Domaine de l’Idylle
This domaine is run by the fastidious and meticulous Tiollier brothers Philippe and Francois. They naturally farm 18 hectars on the well known south bank of the Comb de Savoie and are the Cru leader in the zone of Cruet below the Massif des Bauges. The soils are rocky limestone scree and glacial deposits.
The Cruets, made from Jacquere, are invigorating, cool, steely, salty, and suggest grapefruit, lime, and honeysuckle . The Vieilles Vignes, made from 75 year-old vines, is a hauntingly pure mineral and glacial sap, with a sheen of sweet orchard fruits.
Here the Roussette de Savoie, made from Altesse, gains finesse that others lack. Round and delicate is the style, with macadamia, almonds, currants, and honey. Rich in texture but light in weight.
The red wine is made from the Cru of Arbin, which may be the best cru of all for the Mondeuse variety. This tough mountain vine is the granddaddy of Petite Syrah, and the Rhone’s famous Syrah. But here in these cool, high elevation soils the grape makes a more feminine expression. It is floral and mineral and has tart black and red fruit flavors and savory alpine garrigue.
